Why two quotes for the same room differ by hundreds

Preparation: the biggest single variable. Filling, sanding, caulking and stain blocking can be half the labour on old plaster, and it is the first thing a cheap quote quietly drops.
Coats: a mist coat plus two full coats is the standard. Covering a dark colour or a nicotine-stained ceiling can need a third coat or a blocker, and that should be written down.

Trim detail: panelled doors, moulded architrave, picture rails, coving and spindles are all slow, hand-cut work.

Access: stairwells, high landings and anything outside above single storey need staging or towers, which costs time and equipment.
